Gas a goer
18/11/2008 GAS could be turned on in Leongatha and Korumburra in a few months, putting to rest concerns of more delays.
According to Jemena, the company overseeing contruction of the natural gas network in the regions there are no doubts hanging over the commercial viability of selling natural gas to South Gippsland.
Jemena corporate affairs group manager, Mr Scott Parker said negotiations were sufficiently advanced and the company was confident of finalising a retailer by the end of the year.
Ambulance service in crisis
18/11/2008 An unconscious patient from Yarram was recently forced to wait about 30 minutes while a Leongatha ambulance crew made the trek from Foster.
Region enjoys solid growth
18/11/2008 SOUTH Gippsland's continued solid growth is expected to shore the region up against economic calamity.
Police bust hoons
18/11/2008 The Star was on hand as Leongatha Police swung into action last Tuesday, impounding a car under the state's anti-hoon
legislation.
"This car will be impounded for 48hours. There's quite a few hoons around lately," Senior Constable Jeff Watsford told The Star, as Burchell Panels, Leongatha, loaded a blue Commodore sedan onto its tow truck.
The car will be impounded for two days, because the 60m burnout was a first offence. The driver was hooning in the Leongatha Industrial Estate.
"The message doesn't seem to be getting through to people. Young bucks think they're all Peter Brock and they've got the driving skills to match," Sen Con Watsford said.
Les hits the record books
18/11/2008 Les Boyd is one of the unsung heroes of the local cricket scene.
Not that you'd ever hear him suggest it. But after more than half a century in the game and some 17 years as a local umpire, Les has an army of
admirers.
The reminder that Les was about to umpire his 300th club game in the B Grade Nerrena versus Phillip Island match this weekend came to us via a young cricketer and footy scribe, Isaac McCallum.
"A lot of the boys think he deserves a bit of a story," Isaac said.
The milestone is unprecedented in the LDCA competition.
In addition, Les has also umpired about 50 inter-association games and been secretary and appointments officer of the LDCA umpiring association.
Sadly for the LDCA competition, Les' career will wind up at the end of the season, as he has plans to spend more time with his wife, Julie.
What is the attraction of umpiring?
"The reason I umpire is that years ago we hardly had any umpires, and we always used to get into arguments. And you used to make lifetime enemies," he said.
"I reckon that if you have paid neutral umpires, then the umpires cop it and not the players. You just have to have umpires."
Les played "for a huge amount of years" with Foster and then Town when he came to live in Ruby.
